 MIRACLE MISSION is situated in Kensington B, Randburg, Gauteng, and is a small residential care facility for children. It was established in 1999 in recognition of a great need for intervention in this particular area of our community and nation.
MIRACLE MISSION is registered with Childline and forms part of their very successful “Safe House” Project. Mrs Sproat, who is the Manager of the home, is also a Supervisor with Childline, and in that capacity oversees approx 8 other safe houses. She also serves on the Executive Committee at Childline.
Our main purpose and function is to provide a home for children in distress. This includes children that have been abandoned, children that have been abused and neglected and children that have been infected with the HIV virus. In conjunction with the various welfare organisations, our goal is to ensure the very best long term care for these children and to see them settled in that environment as soon as possible. We ‘stand in the gap’ for these children.
Our home is recognised for the high level of care afforded to the babies that come to us – especially the very tiny babies and those that are physically not so well.
Registered as a Non-profit making organisation, MIRACLE MISSION are audited annually, and funded primarily from private funding with a small grant per month per child from the Government. We are registered with the South African Revenue Services.
From inception in 1999, we have progressively grown as a home – both in the numbers of children that we are caring for and in the range of situations that the children have come to us with, for example:-
- A little girl - a failed abortion at 7 months with severe brain damage
- A boy - born infected with TB
- A boy - chronic lung disease
- A 2 year old girl – full blown AIDS
- A boy – born with one functioning kidney
- A girl – HIV positive – failed to thrive
Most of the children are abandoned in very dire circumstances. Most of them are new borns and are therefore very vulnerable – the initial care that is given to them is critical to ensure their ability to be able to thrive. A number of them are also very ill with various conditions and because of the nursing background of the Manager (Cindy Sproat) we have been very diligent in ensuring that the best possible treatment is offered to these babies. Most times with very positive results but unfortunately in some situations the babies are just too ill or frail to survive.
The children that are healthy are available to be adopted and we have been part of some very successful adoptions - both locally and abroad. We have children in our care that are HIV positive and are healthy at this time (others have passed away).
Two of our children already attend the local pre-primary school and we have one little girl at Bordeaux Primary School.
We currently have four children in school as well as one of the children being at a special needs school.
We hold an annual fund raising event to supplement our income and these events have proved to be very successful. |
